Computers today have become an integral part of our lives. Much of the work that we do today involves a computer in one or the other way. The car that we drive has a computer-controlled ignition system; the traffic on the roads is controlled by computer-based traffic signals and so on.
Computers play a significant role in every sphere of our personal and professional lives. They assist in educating kids, managing finances, obtaining needed information, keeping in touch with distant friends and family. Students can now contact instructors, perform research, write papers, and make presentations using a computer. Personal computers have also led to the concept of ‘Small Office Home Office’ (SOHO) which enables employees to work from their homes.

Basic Operations of a Computer
Input - Accepting data that has been represented in a way that the computer can use.
Processing - Performing arithmetic or logical operations on the represented data.
Output - Displaying results.
Storage - Storing results for later use.
Although , computers are generally considered to be calculating devices that can perform arithmetic operations at a great speed, more than eighty percent of the work done by computers today is of a non-mathematical or non-numerical nature. Hence, present day computers are electronic devices that under a program's direction and control perform certain basic operations.
However, our growing dependence on computers can prove disastrous due to system failures. For instance, NASDAQ had to shut down its entire operations for a day because of the failure of some of its computers.
